CLINICO-ETIOLOGICAL SKETCH OF VOCAL CORD PALSY

OBJECTIVE: To determine clinical features and causesof vocal cord paralysis in our set up.MATERIALAND METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted the department of ENT, Head &Neck Surgery, Hayat Abad Medical complex, Peshawar from January 2010 to December 2012. All newlydiagnosed patients any age either gender included. After enrollment a detailed history taken,thorough ENT systemic examination especially focusing on causes cordpalsy. routine investigation endoscopic upper aero-digestive tract carried outto establish diagnosis paralysis.All these were followed regularly.Thedata collected pre-designed proforma analyzed using SPSS version 15.RESULTS: We studied 90 over period 3 years (2010-2012). Males outnumbered (n-60) withmale female ratio 2:1. These range 6-85 with mean 47.33 ± SD21.15 years. The commonest presentation change voice (100%). Majority (n-52,57.77%) non smoker. Hoarseness dominant (94.44%) patients. Thecommonest palsy idiopathic (34.44%) by thyroid surgery (21.11%). Leftvocal finding.CONCLUSION: concluded this that is still challenge for ENTsurgeon. Although cause top but thyroidectomy has greatcontribution which can be further minimized if surgeon gives some time identifythe recurrent laryngeal nerve during surgery.KEY WORDS: Vocal palsy, fold paralysis, hoarseness, feature, etiology
